Morality Police, Sex and India

khushbooLiving in the western part of the world gives us privileges that we take for granted, plain and simple, we don’t even think of how lucky we are as women to have an opinion, as people to speak our mind freely, as lovers to have the freedom to live together without getting married.  Although, my grandmother might not have liked or approved of my present “living arrangements” I am indeed, one of those people that live with my somebody, because I want to and because I can.

This week  after so much controversy India’s highest court concluded that couples have the right to live together without getting married.  Much of this victory was steered by a well know outspoken actress called Khusboo.

Khusboo’s while famous for her campaigns against HIV and teenage pregnancy was taken to court in 2005 by the “morality police” when she stated in media interviews that she saw nothing wrong with sex before marriage or with unmarried couples living together” npr.com reports.

Even to this day rural India considers arranged marriage the norm while sex out of marriage is kept as secret as possible.
